When, what, and how to feed your hedges for optimal health
Proper fertilization is key to maintaining healthy, vigorous hedges. This guide covers everything you need to know about feeding hedges in Cheshire, from timing and products to application methods.
When to Feed Hedges
Spring Feeding (March)
Primary feeding time
- Apply slow-release fertilizer
- Supports spring growth
- Lasts 3-6 months
- Most important feed of year
Summer Top-Up (June - Optional)
For fast-growing hedges
- Liquid feed or quick-release
- Boosts mid-season growth
- Not essential for all hedges
- Good for recovering hedges
What Fertilizer to Use
Slow-Release Granular (Best Choice)
Recommended: Balanced NPK (e.g., 10-10-10 or 7-7-7)
Advantages:
- Feeds for 3-6 months
- One application per year
- Less risk of burning
- Easy to apply
Organic Options
- Blood, fish & bone: Traditional, effective, slow-release
- Chicken manure pellets: High nitrogen, good for growth
- Compost/manure: Improves soil, gentle feeding
- Seaweed extract: Trace elements, stress resistance
How to Apply Fertilizer
- Clear area: Remove weeds and debris from hedge base
- Apply evenly: Spread fertilizer along entire hedge length
- Keep away from stems: Apply 15-30cm from hedge base
- Follow rates: Use manufacturer's recommended amount
- Water in: Water thoroughly after application
- Mulch: Apply mulch over fertilizer to retain moisture
Feeding Different Hedge Types
| Hedge Type | Fertilizer Type | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Fast-growing (Privet, Leylandii) | High nitrogen | Spring + summer |
| Slow-growing (Yew, Box) | Balanced NPK | Spring only |
| Flowering (Hawthorn) | Higher potassium | Spring |
| Evergreen (Laurel) | Balanced NPK | Spring |
Cheshire Clay Soil Tip
Our heavy clay soils are naturally fertile but can be slow to release nutrients. Organic matter (compost/manure) is especially beneficial as it improves soil structure while feeding.
